As a seasoned notary, you will inevitably encounter a variety of unique notary requests. While you often receive requests to produce documents that fall outside our notarial duties, some requests can be extraordinary. These requests, when they come your way, can be quite disorienting. Today, I aim to guide you on navigating even the most peculiar of requests, reassuring you that you're not alone in this.
What kind of unusual requests am I talking about? I don’t have a complete list of all the different types of requests notaries get. But in my experience and the experience of notaries I have spoken to, here are a few:
Can you notarize a document signed by someone who has passed away? The answer is No. The principal signer is required to provide an ID and acknowledge their signature.
Can you notarize a tattoo? The short answer is no. However, you can notarize a statement about the tattoo.
How do I notarize a document when the signer has no hand? You can notarize for this signer using various methods, including signature by mark. I have had signers hold the pen in their mouth.
There are so many other unusual requests; how you handle them as a notary public may differ by state. In general, here are some things to keep in mind when encountering these kinds of notary requests:
Stay Calm and Informed:
When faced with an unusual notary request, the first rule of thumb is to stay calm. Take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you can handle this. Then, quickly assess the situation and determine if you can legally fulfill the request. Brush up on your knowledge of notary laws and regulations to ensure you’re making informed decisions.

Communication is key in any profession, and notary public is no exception. Don't hesitate to ask if you’re unsure about a request or need clarification from the client. Clear communication can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure that both parties are on the same page. Remember, it’s better to ask questions upfront than deal with complications later.

Sometimes, unusual notary requests require a bit of creative thinking. If the request falls within legality and ethical practice bounds, don’t be afraid to explore unconventional solutions. Whether verifying a signature on a unique document or notarizing a digital transaction, think outside the box to find a solution that works for you and your client. However, ensure your solution is legal within your state's rules and boundaries.
