What is a Mobile Notary?

What is a Mobile Notary? Does that seem like a silly question? Well, I have encountered more than a few people, especially young people, who don’t know what a Notary is, never mind a Mobile Notary. So I thought I would take a moment and explain.
Let's start with a Notary. A Notary Public is a State representative commissioned by the Secretary of State to provide a service whose sole purpose is to verify the identity of those signing certain documents. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is, and it isn't. There is a long list of laws and regulations a Notary must follow to ensure the proper identification of signers and secure the proper documentation of the signing. If a document is challenged in a court of law, a Notary’s journal can be all the evidence needed to support or negate a challenge to the validity of a notarized document. I get the question all the time.” What sorts of documents do you notarize?” Well, there is an exhaustive list on my website here. Also, you can handwrite almost anything and have it notarized.
A Mobile Notary Public is simply what it sounds like. A Notary Public that comes to you. Most mobile notaries don’t have storefront offices. Instead, when you need notary services, they meet you where you want to meet. I have done signings in many homes, Starbucks, the back of my car, the hood of my car, fields, parks, etc. It's a convenience that we (I am a Mobile Notary) offer to the signer.
The fees for a Notary in California are standardized. This list provided by The Notary Council is fairly comprehensive.
Something else to consider is a Mobile Notary will also charge a travel fee. They may call this fee a mobile fee as well. The State does not regulate this fee. Every Mobile Notary will calculate their travel fee differently. I base mine on zip codes. For example, if I am doing a signing in my hometown, there is no travel fee.
To sum it all up, a Mobile Notary is a Notary Public that comes to you!
